Difference Between Plant Cell and Animal Cell

Plants and animals are made up of millions of cells and both have several differences and similarities. Know the difference between plant cell and animal cell in tabular form for better understanding.

Parameters Animal cell Plant cell
Definition Animal cells have many smaller vacuoles Plant cell contains larger singular vacuole that is responsible for storage and maintaining cell shape
Cell Shape Animal cell shape have irregular structure or round in shape Plant cell shape is generally square or rectangular in shape
Cell Wall Cell wall is absent Cell wall is present
Cell Membrane cell membrane is present Cell membrane is present
Endoplasmic Reticulum Endoplasmic Reticulum is present Endoplasmic Reticulum is present
Nucleus Nucleus found in the center of the cell Nucleus found on the side of the cell
Lysosomes Found, Lysosomes contains digestive enzymes that roles is to break down cellular macromolecules Few and rare: vacuole and the Golgi bodies handle molecule degradation of waste cellular products
Centrosomes Centrosomes is present in the cell Centrosomes is not present
Plastids Not found Found
Ribosomes Found Found
Cytoplasm Found Found
Golgi Apparatus Found Found
Vacuoles Generally small and high in number Few Large
Cilia Found Not found
Mitochondria Found and higher in number Found but less in number
Nutrition Mode Heterotrophic autotrophic
Nucleolus Nucleolus present in the nucleus Nucleolus present in the nucleus
Centrioles Centrioles is responsible for the cell division process It is not present in the cell
Peroxisomes Peroxisomes are present in the cytoplasm and perform the oxidation mechanisms for specific biomolecules It is present in the cell cytoplasm functioning as cell oxidizers for cellular molecules
Microfilaments and microtubules It’s functioning to provide support to the cell cytoskeleton It’s functioning to give cytoskeletal support
Cytoskeletons It’s a major task to create a network that organizes the cell component and maintain the cell shape plant cell have a cytoskeleton that maintains the plant cell shape
Cytosol cell organelles are suspended cell organelles are suspended
Microvilli It is found in the intestinal lining helps to extend the surface area for the absorption of food It is not present in the cell
Cilia and Filaments Found, it’s role to allow movement of cells or part of the cell Not found
Plastids Not present Plastids is present in the plant cell and it’s role to provide pigmentation color and also help in the photosynthesis process
Plasmodesmata Not present They facilitate the communication and transport of materials across plant cells.
Osmosis in a hypotonic solution They absorb water molecules by osmosis and easily bursts They absorb water molecules by osmosis but they do not burst They absorb water molecules by osmosis but they not burst
Size and shape Ranging from 10-30um in length Ranging from 10um-100um in length.
