Vice President of India is the second-highest constitutional office after the President in India. Article 63 of the Indian constitution states that “There shall be a Vice President of India”. Due to any reasons if the president of India is not available, then the Vice President of the country can act as president of India and handle all the responsibilities till the president not elected and can hold this position for a maximum of 6 months. Vice President may resign from his or her post by submitting his or her resignation to the President of India. The resignation becomes effective from the same day it is accepted.

The Vice President of India is elected indirectly by an electoral college comprises both houses member. Vice President gets INR 4,00000 salary per month along with other allowances and also entitled to get the pension, which is 50 per cent of the salary.

Vice President is elected for 5 years and eligible for re-election. Any bills, resolutions, motions or questions can be passed only after his/her consent, otherwise not passed. Vice President also acts as  Honourable Chancellor of Panjab University, Chandigarh.

Important Points Need to Know

What qualification required to be elected as Vice President, a person must be an India citizen, age should be more than 35 years, not holding any office and most importantly, should be a member of Rajya Sabha.

Interested candidate has to make a security deposit of INR 15000 in Reserve Bank of India, Election Commission of India appointed returning officer who is responsible for conducting an election, the officer issued a public notice. Any person who is intending to contest for Election, required to be nominated by at least 20 members of Parliament as Proposers and 20 as seconders. All eligible candidates name are added to the ballot after scrutiny by returning officer. Returning officer declare results to the electoral college, then submit the final results to the Centraal Government ( Ministry of Law and Justice) and Election Commission of India thereafter, the central government publishes elected candidate name as Vice President of India, in the official Gazette.

Interesting Facts about Vice President of India

Muppavarapu Venkaiah Naidu is the 3rd Vice President from State Andhra Pradesh, this list comprising VV Giri and Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, both of them later became President.

Venkaiah Naidu had learnt Hindi in order to attract North India people and later he starts advocating Hindi as the National language

Venkaiah Naidu had played an essential role during 975-77 emergency, he protested against Indira Gandhi and was imprisoned by Indira government.

Mohammad Hamid Ansari was awarded Padma Shree in 1984
